FAQs

I’m new to Pilates. Can I book a class?

Absolutely! Pilates is suitable for all levels, and we offer beginner-friendly sessions to help you get started comfortably. Beginners are one of our favorite demographics! We love introducing you to the Pilates method and exploring your physical goals and boundaries together. Our instructors will guide you through the fundamentals, providing you the support you need in every step of the way.

What kind of equipment do you use?

Our studio is fully equipped with Balanced Body Pilates apparatus, including Reformers, Wunda Chairs, Ladder Barrel, Springboards, and Trapeze Table, as well as small equipment like foam rollers, spine correctors, and foot alignment tools.

I’m pregnant. Can I do Pilates?

Yes! We offer pre- and postnatal Pilates to support you throughout your pregnancy and beyond. Always consult with your doctor or midwife before beginning any exercise program. We’ll guide you through trimester-specific exercises during pregnancy and help you return to your practice once your baby is born. Congratulations—we look forward to supporting you in our studio!

I intend to become pregnant. Should I start Pilates before or during pregnancy?

Congratulations on your decision to bring a beautiful baby into the world! We support women who are preparing for pregnancy by helping them build strength, establish a healthy routine, and develop body awareness. Starting Pilates before pregnancy gives you a point of reference—allowing you to deeply activate your abdominal and back muscles, which will make modifications easier once you are pregnant. This foundation also helps after pregnancy, making it easier to reconnect with your body, heal, and regain strength. That said, we welcome you at any stage—before, during, or after pregnancy—and will tailor sessions to your needs. Any moment your life path brings you to our door is valued and appreciated!

I’m sick—what should I do?

If you’re feeling unwell, please stay home and rest to ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone. We kindly ask that you cancel at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a cancellation fee.

In what language do you teach?

Our classes are offered in English and Dutch, and some of our instructors speak additional languages. Since different teachers have different language abilities, we encourage you to consult with us about your preferences, and we’ll find the best teacher match for you. We proudly celebrate Amsterdam’s multicultural scene, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and supported in their Pilates journey!

Why should I take private reformer class instead of joining a reformer group class?

At Pilates Practice Amsterdam, we strongly advocate for private Reformer lessons as the most effective way to truly learn and benefit from the Pilates method. While group Reformer classes have gained popularity in recent years—mainly as a more affordable way to experience the equipment—the depth and quality of teaching in a private session are unmatched. In group settings, the teacher must lead a set routine, with limited opportunity to offer meaningful corrections or adapt to individual needs. It’s simply not possible to give each participant the focused attention they may need, especially if someone has a specific condition or postural issue that deserves tailored care. Private sessions offer a personalized approach that supports real learning, mindful movement, and the ability to address the finer details of your body. Even if you choose to combine private lessons with occasional group classes or home practice, the foundation built in one-on-one sessions will make everything else more effective. Yes, a private lesson is more expensive—but it’s also more valuable. Ten private Reformer sessions will bring you far greater results than ten group classes, both in terms of body awareness and overall progress.

How do I book a class?

You can book a class by contacting us through our website, email, or phone. Let us know your availability and any specific needs, and we’ll find the best session for you!

What is your cancellation policy?

We require at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations. Late cancellations or no-shows may be subject to a fee. If you're sick, please let us know as soon as possible.

Do you offer trial classes?

Yes! If you're new to Pilates, we encourage you to start with our welcoming package—three private introductory sessions that include a physical assessment. This allows you to experience the benefits firsthand before committing to a longer program. These sessions also help you get familiar with the Pilates method and our teaching approach. Typically, introductory classes are with one teacher, giving the teacher a chance to provide a sample of a structured learning process and personalized guidance.

How often should I do Pilates?

For best results, we recommend practicing 2-3 times per week. However, even one session a week will bring noticeable improvements in strength and mobility if you are committed and you stick to your class like gold.

How do you ensure inclusivity at your studio?

Inclusivity is at the heart of Pilates Practice Amsterdam. We welcome people of all backgrounds, body types, abilities, genders, and ages to practice Pilates in a safe and supportive environment. Our teachers are trained to adapt exercises to suit individual needs, whether you're recovering from an injury, managing a condition, or exploring movement for the first time. We believe that Pilates is for everybody and every body, and we strive to create a space where all clients feel seen, heard, and respected. Our studio is a judgment-free zone, where movement is tailored to celebrate differences, not erase them. If you have specific concerns or requirements, we encourage open communication so we can make your Pilates experience as comfortable and empowering as possible.

Should I do Pilates if I have hypermobility?

Yes! Pilates is an excellent practice for people with hypermobility. It helps build strength, stability, and control, which are essential for supporting joints that may be more prone to excessive movement and strain. However, hypermobility requires a mindful approach—our focus will be on stabilizing the joints rather than over-stretching them. Hypermobile bodies are often overlooked in the fitness industry and very often come into our studio injured or confused that they haven't found a physical practice that works for them. We are proud to say that the Pilates method is probably the most efficient practice for hypermobile bodies. At our studio, we tailor sessions to help you develop strength in the right areas, improve proprioception (your sense of body positioning), and create balanced movement patterns that support your body safely. With expert guidance, Pilates can help you feel more in control of your movement and reduce discomfort or instability.

Can I bring my child to the studio?

Absolutely! Your baby or child is more than welcome! As a private studio, we have the flexibility to create a cosy, accommodating space for both you and your little one. We’re happy to help you up the stairs and set up a comfortable spot for them to hang out during your session. Bringing some toys is a great idea to keep them occupied, but if your child is older and curious to be involved, we welcome that too.

How can I get to your studio?

The studio is located at Jacob van Lennepkade 334, right in the heart of Amsterdam West, near the bustling streets of Kinkerstraat, Overtoom, and Bilderdijkstraat. You can reach us easily by public transport, bike, or on foot—perfect for combining your class with other daily errands. With a vibrant local market, unique shops, and cozy cafés just around the corner, your visit to the studio can be part of a delightful day in the neighborhood.

What should I wear to a Pilates class?

Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothes that allow you to move freely. Avoid clothing with zippers, as they can damage the equipment. Barefoot or grip socks are recommended for safety and stability.

Can Pilates help with injuries or chronic pain?

Yes! Pilates is a highly effective and precise method, widely used by experienced teachers for rehabilitation and injury prevention. If you have a specific concern or history, let us know—we will assess your needs and provide a professional recommendation on the best approach and protocols for you. The point is to help you return back to life and enjoy life as you wish.

Why is Pilates different from other workouts?

Unlike high-impact workouts, Pilates focuses on controlled movement, core strength, posture, and flexibility, helping you build a balanced and resilient body while reducing the risk of injury. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to be flexible to start Pilates. The method emphasizes active stretching rather than passive flexibility, meaning we work within your body's real range of motion—whatever that may be—while ensuring proper activation and control.

For example, instead of passively pulling your body into extreme positions, we focus on what you can do with strength and intention. How high can you lift your own leg or bend your spine using the right muscles? Can you go further by activating the correct support systems rather than forcing yourself into positions you can’t sustain? This approach makes Pilates different from traditional workouts—it’s not about pushing harder but about moving smarter.

Can men do Pilates?

Of course! Pilates was originally created by a man, Joseph Pilates, and is practiced by athletes, dancers, and fitness enthusiasts of all genders. It’s a fantastic method for strength, flexibility, and injury prevention. Do not hesitate. Many men are doing Pilates and are proud of it!

Can I switch between studio and online lessons?

Yes! We highly encourage you to switch between studio and online lessons as needed. Why stop practicing just because you're on holiday or traveling for work? Bring your passion with you! Our teachers are creative and will ensure you get a great class anywhere. We can also recommend basic equipment to facilitate your online practice and keep you moving no matter where you are.

I feel exhausted. Should I take a Pilates class?

Yes. Pilates can actually be one of the best things to do when you’re feeling exhausted. A thoughtful, well-guided session can help restore your energy, not deplete it. At Pilates Practice Amsterdam, we see movement as a way to support—not fight—your body. While some lessons are about pushing boundaries, others (especially during certain life cycles or phases) focus on safeguarding your energy, refining movement efficiency, and training your ability to stay focused and present. We set the goals together, and you’ll never leave our studio feeling beaten up. Instead, you’ll leave more grounded, uplifted, and reconnected to yourself.

Is Pilates good for office workers?

Absolutely. Pilates is one of the best practices you can choose if you spend long hours at a desk. It’s the perfect complement to cardio or other training, as it safeguards your posture, supports your spine, and helps undo the effects of sitting all day. Think: relief from slouched upper backs, tight shoulders, forward head posture, and even stiff eyes. Pilates can also reduce headaches, lower back pain, and improve concentration and overall performance. Being proactive means trying a Pilates class as soon as possible—and feeling the difference for yourself!
