reformer
The term "Reformer Pilates" is often misused, as Pilates is a comprehensive method that can be practiced both on the mat and on various apparatus. The Reformer is just one of these apparatus, albeit a highly versatile and well-known one.
What is the Reformer?
Designed by Joseph Pilates, the Reformer was created to support and challenge the body through controlled resistance. It consists of a moving carriage, springs for adjustable tension, straps, and a footbar, allowing for a wide range of exercises that enhance strength, flexibility, coordination, and control. Originally developed to rehabilitate injured soldiers and later embraced by dancers for its precision and effectiveness, the Reformer remains a powerful tool for both rehabilitation and performance enhancement.
Why is it special?
The Reformer’s unique system of springs and pulleys provides variable resistance that adapts to each individual, offering both support and challenge in movement. This makes it ideal for rehabilitation, strength-building, and refining movement efficiency while ensuring a balanced and aligned body. Whether used for gentle recovery or advanced athletic conditioning, the Reformer embodies Pilates’ core principles of control, concentration, and fluidity, making it an essential part of a well-rounded Pilates practice.
wunda chair
The Wunda Chair is one of the most dynamic and challenging pieces of Pilates apparatus, originally designed by Joseph Pilates as a multifunctional tool that could double as a regular chair. Compact yet powerful, it consists of a sturdy wooden base with a padded seat and a spring-loaded pedal, offering a unique combination of strength, stability, and balance training. The Wunda Chair is particularly effective for core engagement, lower and upper body conditioning, and functional movement patterns, making it a favorite among athletes, dancers, and rehabilitation clients alike. Its small footprint and versatile design allow for a wide range of exercises, from seated and standing work to advanced acrobatics, all reinforcing the Pilates principles of control, precision, and efficiency in movement.
cadillac
The Pilates Cadillac, or officially Trapeze Table, is one of the most versatile and iconic pieces of Pilates equipment, originally designed by Joseph Pilates. He first developed it by attaching springs to a hospital bed frame to support the rehabilitation of injured patients, later refining it into a complete movement system used for everything from therapeutic work to advanced athletic conditioning.
Pilates Practice Amsterdam features the latest Balanced Body Cadillac, designed for both accessibility and challenge. The frame is taller than a raised mat, making it easier to mount and ideal for clients who need assistance lying down, while also providing an incredible setup for hanging work, manual stretches, and inverted strong arm and leg series. With upgraded springs, a more stable structure, and thoughtful refinements, our Cadillac allows for smoother transitions and greater adaptability. We love working with it and guiding everyone through the vast Pilates repertoire this apparatus offers!
ladder barrel
The Ladder Barrel is a unique Pilates apparatus designed by Joseph Pilates to enhance spinal mobility, core strength, and flexibility. Its curved barrel and sturdy ladder rungs provide a supportive yet challenging environment for deep back extensions, hip mobility, and core stabilization. Particularly beneficial for improving posture, balance, and overall spinal health, the Ladder Barrel allows practitioners to explore a wide range of movements, from gentle stretches to advanced strength-building exercises. Its design encourages safe and controlled articulation of the spine, making it an essential tool for both rehabilitation and athletic conditioning. Whether used for lengthening tight muscles or developing deep core control, the Ladder Barrel is a powerful addition to a well-rounded Pilates practice.
springboard
The Pilates Springboard is a dynamic and space-efficient apparatus that brings the power of spring resistance training into a vertical setup. Designed by NYC-based master teacher Ellie Herman, it offers a full-body workout using a wall-mounted board with adjustable springs, allowing for many of the exercises performed on the Cadillac but in a more compact form, now executed from floor level.
At Pilates Practice Amsterdam, we are thrilled to work with the latest model of the Balanced Body Springboard, which includes the Cadillac push-through bar—making it truly like a compact Cadillac in a wall unit. This feature expands exercise possibilities and enables duet or trio sessions to take place simultaneously, making it a versatile and efficient piece of equipment that enhances flow and precision. Its vertical orientation challenges balance, coordination, and control while ensuring safety from a stable floor position, making it an excellent tool for standing and seated exercises, core work, and dynamic arm and leg series.
We must highlight that the Springboard is a favorite piece of equipment for pregnancy Pilates, suitable for all stages of pregnancy under proper guidance. Its adaptable resistance and upright positioning provide safe and effective support, allowing expecting mothers to build strength, maintain mobility, and stay connected to their changing bodies throughout each trimester.
we restore your feet, the foundation of your body
Your feet carry your body’s weight and support your entire organization throughout the day. Yet, they’re often overlooked and rarely go barefoot these days. Pilates offers the perfect opportunity to strengthen your feet, from toe coordination to exercises that reinforce the whole foot. These practices ensure you have the proper push-off for walking, supporting your movement until you become 100 years old! Activating the feet correctly in alignment with the rest of your body engages the core line in the most profound way. Achieving this sensation requires specialised teaching, the machines alone won’t do it for you. Restore your feet today and invest in your body’s foundation.
healthy and agile spine
The Spine Corrector and Spine Fitter are two brilliant tools designed to restore mobility, strengthen deep postural muscles, and promote spinal health. The Spine Corrector, a classic piece from Joseph Pilates' original apparatus, helps open the chest, support better posture, and refine movement patterns. The modern Spine Fitter builds on these principles, using multiple pressure points to release tension and stimulate spinal awareness. Together, they offer a timeless and innovative approach to keeping your back strong, mobile, and resilient.
timeless tools
The Magic Circle and Pilates poles have been part of the method since Joseph Pilates' time, proving that simple, well-designed tools stand the test of time. These small but powerful apparatus refine alignment, enhance stability, and add resistance, bridging the tradition of Pilates with today’s evolving practice.
